What to do in Lyon

Theadora Beavan

Lyon, France is a city where history and creativity come together, forming a vibrant and timeless atmosphere. Located between the Rhône and Saône rivers, it is renowned for its culture, its beautifully preserved quarters and most importantly its fabled culinary history. From contemporary riverbank museums to hidden renaissance passageways contouring the colourful architecture, Lyon offers a variety of experiences that appeal to all travellers. Whether wandering the cobblestone streets or admiring the skyline from a viewpoint, there will always be something fun to do and something to learn. This is what makes it one of France’s most memorable places to visit; the city overflowing with both experiences and beauty.

Vieux Lyon

Walking into Vieux Lyon is like going back in time. The narrow, Renaissance-era streets are winding roads surrounded by pastel and bright buildings that radiate the city’s history. The UNESCO-listed area is known for its secret passageways that cut through buildings and courtyards. These were once used by silk workers and now they hold a key part in Lyon’s story. While you’re exploring, make sure to check out the Saint-Jean Cathedral with its incredible astronomical clock. Little artisan shops, selling local crafts, souvenirs and classic Lyonnaise treats like the famous praline, are perfect for bringing back little memories. All this gives Lyon’s old town its special charm.

Fourvière

For a true Lyon experience, head up to the beautiful Fourvière where you can overlook the whole city. All it takes is a quick funicular ride from the old town, or a scenic stroll up the hill through the rose gardens. At the tip you’ll find the gorgeous Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, visible from almost anywhere in Lyon. The interior design is astonishing, yet almost pales in comparison to the view of the city’s rooftops, nestled between two rivers. If you’re lucky you’ll even get to see the snowy capped Alps. A short walk away are ancient Roman theatres, a glimpse into the city’s rich history, dating back over 2000 years. These well-preserved ruins allow an insight into Roman life and make the walk up the Fourvière hill truly worthwhile.

Food

Lyon is famous for its food and diving into its culture is a must. The best way to do this is eating at a classic bouchon, a traditional Lyonnaise restaurant that idealises local recipes and a cozy authentic vibe. The indoor market, Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, has high-end produce as well as local products. This makes it the perfect spot to taste, explore and understand the importance of food in Lyon’s identity.

Presqu’île

The Presqu’île, nestled perfectly between the Rhône and the Saône, is the vibrant heart of the city. The central area is easily accessible on foot, filled with shopping streets, elegant 19th-century architecture and iconic squares like Place Bellecour. With a gorgeous central statue, cafes and bakeries just nearby, Bellecour is not only one of Europe's largest plazas, but a charming area for locals and tourists alike. It is perfect for a quick shop or bite to eat, people watching or simply a stroll to soak in the city’s atmosphere.

The Musée des Confluences

Musée de Confluences is one of Lyon’s most striking landmarks; instantly recognisable for its bold and futuristic design made of glass and steel. Its design, which looks like a crystal, a cloud, and even a spaceship, emphasises the building itself and how the modernisation of it broadcasts the museum's forward thinking. The museum explores themes of science, culture and global history. Through engaging and interactive ways, exhibitions of humanity, nature and the universe are connected. Uniquely, the museum is situated at the confluence of the rivers, hence the name. It symbolises the meeting of ideas, civilisations and natural forces that define its purpose.

Conclusion

Lyon brings the best of many worlds together. Cobblestoned streets laced in history, a food scene that celebrates tradition and creativity, vibrant art and culture; Lyon offers it all. Whether you explore major landmarks or simply enjoy the quieter streets and local markets, the best way of experiencing this beautiful city is in your own way. Allow yourself to discover the small, hidden moments that make the city truly beautiful: peruse the streets at your will, experience the nightlife, admire the architecture, make the most of every moment.
